Brake discs reach 1000 degrees Celsius during single braking. During some races, they overheat many times to that value and then cool down on long straights to warm up again during the following braking, from the speeds significantly exceeding 300km/h. They can stop the vehicle driving 100km/h at a distance of just 17m.
The disc cooling system may have up to 1000 air holes. It is made of carbon fibre and the process of production of each disc comprises of many cycles of compression and baking the structure, what takes in total several months. A single disc made in that way weighs about a kilogram whereas a disc made of standard materials (cast iron) weighs a few kilograms.
